We here in Wisconsin take sturgeon spearing season seriously. Annual fisheries dot the lakes around the Badger state. And while technically you can use bait when spearing sturgeon – in most jurisdictions, particularly in areas like the Lake Winnebago System, using bait to specifically attract sturgeon is not allowed. BUT if you wanted to, you could use any variety of bait to lure the prehistoric fish; shrimp/prawns/nightcrawlers/dead fish/smelt/shad/herring OR how about mermaid?
Now you’re probably saying, “John… mermaids aren’t real. And even if they were, would they make good sturgeon bait?”
I present to you exhibit A-quarium.
An underwater aquatic artist named Masha was performing as a mermaid for children at an aquarium in China but instead of seeing a delicate underwater ballet visitors were shocked and horrified when a sturgeon swam up and tried to eat her head.
You can see in the video below Masha swim into the path of the giant fish (or visa versa) and it bites down, fitting her whole head in its mouth, while children and other spectators gasp in horror. She was able to escape the fish’s jaws and swim to the surface, but in the attack suffered head, neck and eye injuries.
And adding insult to injury – she said her boss forced her to go back into the water to finish the performance, which she was paid about $100 for.
