News stories about bears breaking into vehicles for food or whatever seemingly have been increasing in frequency. It doesn’t help that humans wearing bear costumes are contributing to these numbers.
Four people were arrested in Los Angeles and have been charged with insurance fraud and conspiracy after claiming a bear broke into cars and caused thousands of dollars in damage when in fact, the bear, was actually a person in a bear costume.
The California Department of Insurance says the suspects filed a claim with their insurance company saying that a bear destroyed a 2010 Rolls-Royce and they even provided a video appearing to show the animal going wild inside the vehicle.
The Dept. of Insurance (in their due diligence) was a little suspicious wondering if the bear was actually a real bear. They even sought expert testimony from biologists with the California Department of Fish and Wildlife to take a look at the video and they confirmed that “it was clearly a human in a bear suit.”
The insurance department also discovered two other claims made by the four suspects with two different insurance companies again falsely claiming a bear destroyed a pair of cars.
In total, the suspects attempted to defraud insurance companies of about $141,000.
