APPLETON, Wis–An historic home on the Lawrence University campus may have a date with the wrecking ball. Lawrence has applied for a demolition permit to take down the house at 128 North Union Street.
The home has been on the national Register of Historic Places as part of the City Park Historic District since 2002. The house was built in 1894, and the Historical Society says it “contributes to the significance of the Appleton City Park Historic District…as a fine example of a Queen Anne style house with integrity of form and detailing.”
The building is currently vacant and Lawrence has not been maintaining it. At a community meeting last week, neighbors voiced their displeasure over the demolition plan to Lawrence President Laurie Carter.
The school has not said what it will do with the property after the house is torn down. The city has not approved the demolition permit yet. It estimates that work would begin in mid-July.
