Legendary singer and sheer force of nature Tina Turner has died at age 83.
According to Tina’s Facebook page, “”It is with great sadness that we announce the passing of Tina Turner,” the statement said on Facebook. “With her music and her boundless passion for life, she enchanted millions of fans around the world and inspired the stars of tomorrow. Today we say goodbye to a dear friend who leaves us all her greatest work: her music. All our heartfelt compassion goes out to her family. Tina, we will miss you dearly.”
Born Anna Mae Bullock, Tina became known as the Queen of Rock ‘n’ Roll for her amazing, high spirited performances together with her husband as part of the Ike and Tina Turner Review. Her performance on their cover of CCR’s Proud Mary is legendary as was her incendiary version of the semi-autobiographical Nutbush City Limits. Along the way, she was the first female and the first black artist ever on the cover of Rolling Stone and is even credited with being the person who taught Mick Jagger to dance.
By the 1980s, Tina had shaken herself loose of her talented but abusive husband and set out on her own. She relaunched her career as a solo artist with enormous hits such as Private Dancer, Better Be Good to Me, We Don’t Need Another Hero, The Best and the song which provided the title to her biopic, What’s Love Got to do With It?
Tina is a two-time inductee to the Rock ‘n’ Roll Hall of Fame as a solo artist and as a member of the Ike and Tina Turner review and was recognized by the Kennedy Center Honors.
