APPLETON, Wis–The city of Appleton is going back to square one in the process of building a new library. Mayor Jake Woodford is recommending the Common Council reject all bids provided this week for the project.
Woodford wants the team working on the design to go back to square one and develop a library building that could fit within the original budget.
Initially, the city earmarked $26-million for the project. Initial estimates for the redevelopment came in closer to $40-million–which the Library Board thought it could make up through private fundraising.
This week’s bids came in $14-million above that. The mayor hopes to have a new library design ready by next spring.
