The Hollywood story for Wrexham AFC continued Saturday when the European football club defeated Charlton Athletic 3-0 and clinched promotion to the EFL Champions League next season. This promotion makes it the third straight for the Welsh club owned by actors Ryan Reynolds and Rob McElhenney who purchased the team in 2021.
European football teams employ a tier system where top and bottom teams can be promoted to the league above or relegated to the league below respectively. Wrexham played in the fifth-tier National League when they were purchased in 2021 and for the last three years finished high enough in the standings (or ‘table’ as it is referred to in Europe) to be promoted to League Two, League One and now the second-tier Champions League next season. Wrexham has never played higher than the second-tier league which they haven’t been in since 1982. The top league is the Premier League which features such storied teams as Manchester United, Arsenal and Tottenham Hotspur.
The new season of Welcome To Wrexham – the reality show documenting the team – debuts on May 15th and can be seen on FX and Hulu.
