The first, fabulous trailer for The Fantastic Four: First Steps finally gives audiences a sneak peek into Marvel’s First Family and possibly a resetting of the MCU.
The Fantastic Four are Reed Richards (Pedro Pascal), Sue Storm (Vanessa Kirby), Johnny Storm (Joseph Quinn), and Ben Grimm (Ebon Moss-Bachrach) – we even get to see H.E.R.B.I.E. the robot suggesting a lighter approach to the film. The retro-futuristic (retrofuturism) world the story takes place in also suggests a possible alternative timeline for the story – not yet attached to the larger Marvel Cinematic Universe we’ve seen so far.
In the trailer, we get to see the FF’s power sets for the first time (including a masterfully-articulated Ben Grimm/The Thing) but Marvel head Kevin Feige assured us that this will NOT be an origin story (there will obviously be flashbacks to their tragic/transformative space flight) but it will pick up with the Fantastic Four firmly established in their world.
It also looks like the story will be sampling from the classic Jack Kirby / Stan Lee “Coming of Galactus” storyline as we do get a glimpse of the Devourer of Worlds toward the end of the trailer (thankfully not presented as a space cloud).
As the Marvel Cinematic Universe shifts into Phase 5, this hopefully puts behind a series of failed attempts to bring the FF to the big screen. The Fantastic Four: First Steps is one of THE MOST Highly-Anticipated (and I would say important) films to date for the future foundation of the Marvel Cinematic Universe. Excelsior!
The Fantastic Four: First Steps is directed by Matt Shakman (WandaVision) and lifts off on July 25th in theaters everywhere.
