This week David Letterman returned to the Ed Sullivan Theater for the first time since his semi retirement 8 1/2 years ago. While chatting with the current host of The Late Show, Stephen Colbert, Letterman revealed that one of the things he misses most about doing the show is being attacked by Green Day drummer Tre Cool.
Said Dave, “Whenever Green Day would be on, I was frightened by the drummer. Whenever they would finish, he would charge the desk and lunge at me, to the point where I assumed he was kidding around or perhaps he wanted to hurt me. Looking back at that now, I just think, Wow, what a great experience that was.”
While it didn’t quite happen like Dave remembers, here is a montage of all of Green Day’s appearances on The Late Show and the decidedly odd ways Tre wrapped up each song. He certainly shows how he earned his name.
