The mystery man has been identified.
The man in question here is the ‘Old Man Carrying Sticks‘ on the album cover of Led Zeppelin IV.
In a Rolling Stone article writer Daniel Kreps chronicles a researcher at the University of West England who came across the picture of the ‘Old Man Carrying Sticks‘ in a photo album from 1892.
Rock legend has it that Robert Plant came across the picture in an antique shop and brought it to the band for the cover of their 1971 album ‘Led Zeppelin IV’.
The researcher was able to determine that the man’s name was Lot Long (possibly Longyear). He was a roofer/thatcher, was 70 when the picture was taken in 1892 and passed away only a year later in 1893.
The photographer, was named Ernest Howard Farmer, who died in 1944 . . . almost 30 years before the photo became famous.
