OSHKOSH, Wis. — Criminal charges will not be filed against an Oshkosh police officer in connection with a shooting incident.
Prosecutors find the unidentified officer was justified in shooting Benson Thao near the Mill Street boat launch on June 29.
Officers were called to the launch after learning that Thao was drunk and carrying a loaded rifle. After failing to comply with officers’ commands, he allegedly pointed the rifle at them, prompting one officer to fire at him.
Thao is charged in Winnebago County Court with Reckless Endangerment and faces up to 12 1/2 years in prison if convicted.
