GREEN BAY, Wis–The Department of Natural Resources says the removal of PCB’s from the lower Fox River is done. The US Environmental Protection Agency has completed it reviews and certifies the process is complete.
PCB’s were dredged from the river and lower Green Bay for 17-years, ending in 2020. Crews removed six million cubic yards of sediment from a 39-mile stretch of the Fox, at a cost of $1-billion.
Three paper companies were ordered by the courts to foot the bill: Georgia-Pacific, Glatfelter, and N-C-R, all of whom owned the facilities where the PCB’s were dumped into the river as part of the manufacturing of carbonless copy paper in the 1950’s through the 1970’s.
