Jack Black is one of those types of celebrities that you just can’t help but feel is a good dude. Sure, his persona is that of a wild man, but when all is said and done, there is a clearly a big heart pumping tenaciously in his chest.
At a recent charity event, Jack had the opportunity to meet Abraham, a young super-fan of Jack’s movie School of Rock. Abraham also suffers from a rare illness. When Jack met Abraham, he could very easily have just said “Hi, thanks for being a fan” and went on with his day thinking he did his good deed for the day. But Jack goes further. He takes the young boy’s hand, looks directly into his eyes and makes a real human connection as he struggles to remember the words to the song he recorded 20 years ago. It may not seem like a big thing but it made the boy’s day.
Sure, there may be some real self-involved, a-hole celebrities out there. But there are plenty more like Jack who understand that their celebrity status allows them to bring a little sunshine into the life of young fans like Abraham. It reminds me other others like Robert Downey Jr., Paul Rudd and some of the other Marvel stars who are known to visit children’s hospitals in their super hero uniforms. That’s a trend that may have been started by Johnny Depp. Despite whatever other flaw he may have, for year’s he has regularly taken his Jack Sparrow with him when he travels and makes time to visit ailing kids. I’ve been told our friend T.J. Miller (who will be back at Skyline in a couple weeks) , when on the road doing comedy, would do the same with his Ranger Jones uniform from the Yogi Bear movie.
Sometimes, it’s nice to be reminded that there are good people in the world. Even if some of them are celebrities.
