Saturday’s tribute concert for the late Foo Fighters drummer Taylor Hawkins at London’s Wembley Stadium was filled with amazing and, at times, heartbreaking performances.
Dave and Taylor’s 12-year-old prodigy Nandi Bushnell joining the Foos on “Learn to Fly”. Wolfgang Van Halen, joined by Dave, celebrating his own dad with an amazing cover of “Hot for Teacher”. Geddy and Alex from RUSH performing “2112”, “Working Man” and “YYZ” with Dave sitting in for their own gone-to-soon drummer. Paul McCartney‘s first EVER live performance of “Oh Darling” accompanied by The Pretenders’ Chrissie Hynde. Brian May’s emotional solo performance of Queen’s “Love of My Life”. And Dave, understandably, overcome with emotion and breaking down crying during “Times Like These”.
However, arguably the performance that seems to have resonated most with people was Taylor’s own 16-year-old son, Shane, taking his late father’s place behind the kit with his dad’s band on what had to be an extremely cathartic version of “My Hero”. I’m not sure anyone has ever hit the skins that hard or with more emotion!
