Long time drummer for Yes, Alan White, passed away today at his home near Seattle at age 72. White replaced original Yes drummer Bill Bruford in 1972 when Bruford left the band to join King Crimson less than a week before a scheduled Yes tour. Alan went on to play drums and percussion on over 40 studio and live Yes albums as well as play over 3000 concert dates with the band known for it’s high turnover.
However, probably more people have heard White play on a song he recorded before joining Yes. Pre Yes, Alan was the drummer for John Lennon‘s Plastic Ono Band which included him performing on Imagine.
Alan recalled receiving a phone call from Lennon asking him to join the band and almost hanging up because he thought it was a prankster.
White died after a short illness, just three days after Yes had announced that he would NOT be taking part in their upcoming 50th anniversary tour for their album Close to the Edge.
He leaves behind a wife of over 40 years, Gigi, as well as a son and daughter.
White’s family took to his Facebook page earlier today to pay tribute with this message:
