On the golf course the Golden Bear (Jack Nicklaus) is arguably the greatest ‘bear’ to ever tee it up.
The black bear in the video below is not.
Video shot on the 12th hole at Swaneset Golf Course and Country Club in British Columbia shows somewhat if a stand-off between a black bear and a set of golf clubs.
The bear (who was spooked by a golf cart) came golfer Jim Jeves’ way FAST
Jeves said,
“Honestly, I didn’t have time to really think. I won’t say I ran, but I definitely didn’t back away slowly. I was moving quickly and loudly calling out ‘Hey bear! Hey bear!’ To try to scare or slow him. It didn’t. The one thing I did do, which I later thought was stupid, was drop my club. The one thing that might have slowed him if it had come at me.”
The bear doesn’t really know what to make of the clubs and cautiously approaches, retreats, approaches, retreats until choosing to take refuge in a nearby tree for a moment then… just runs away.
Not sure what on-course etiquette says about bears interrupting your round (maybe winter rules take precedent and you get a free drop?) but I’d assume you still have to play it where it lies – even if there’s a bear near by.
