In a joint statement from the Tokyo 2020 Organizing and International Olympic Committees, it was announced that due to the current circumstances pertaining to the coronavirus the Summer Olympic games – scheduled to be held this year in Japan’s capital – will be postponed until 2021.
In a conference call Tuesday morning which included IOC President Thomas Bach and Japanese Prime Minister Abe Shinzo among others, it was determined to ensure the health and safety of competitors, spectators and everyone involved in the execution of the Games that rescheduling them would be the best option for everyone involved.
Although no specific reschedule dates were given, the determination was that they would be held “no later than summer 2021”.
