Punctuation is important. It can be the difference between “Let’s eat, Grandma” and “Let’s eat Grandma.”
In case you’re unfamiliar, the “Oxford comma” is a comma used after the second-to-last item in a list of three or more items, before ‘and’ or ‘or’… for example:
This year’s WAPL International Incident will be hosted by Rick, Len, John, and Elwood.
In that sentence, the comma after “John,” is the Oxford comma.
But not everyone uses the Oxford. Journalists and others who use “AP Style” to format their writing do not use it, which can lead to some confusion.
16-year-old Kelsie Satterfield made a video on TikTok demonstrating the problem, and got the internet riled up in the process.
I, for one, am a definite supporter of the Oxford comma. What about you? Do you use it, do you avoid it, or are you one of those people who make life difficult for the rest of us by using no punctuation at all?
